EXPLAINED: McLaren’s Ayrton Senna-inspired livery for the Monaco Grand Prix

McLaren has introduced a bold, Ayrton Senna-inspired livery for the upcoming Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. Collaborating with sponsor OKX, McLaren has transformed the MCL38’s traditional papaya orange into the iconic yellow, green and blue of Senna’s legendary helmet.

Design Details

The special livery extends beyond mere color changes. Inside the cockpit, drivers will find some of Senna’s most famous quotes. Additionally, the front and rear wings proudly display the three-time world champion’s name, ensuring his legacy is visually represented on the track.

Timing and Significance

Although last weekend’s race at Imola marked the 30th anniversary of Senna’s tragic death, McLaren chose Monaco for this tribute to celebrate his remarkable achievements. Senna secured six victories at Monaco, including five consecutive wins for McLaren from 1989 to 1993.

Statements from McLaren

McLaren CEO Zak Brown expressed the team’s pride in honoring Senna:

“The team is proud to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary life and racing legacy of Ayrton Senna through this McLaren livery. Senna remains revered and respected as Formula 1’s greatest icon and McLaren’s most decorated driver. His impact on McLaren is enormous, not only through his racing record but also his presence within the team and now his legacy. It’s an honor to race for him at his most successful circuit in his green, yellow, and blue colors.”

Family Approval and Involvement

The idea for the Senna livery has been in development for 12 months and has received full approval from the Senna family.

Bianca Senna, representing Senna Global, remarked:

“It’s an honor to recognize Ayrton through these liveries in collaboration with both McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate his life and legacy through his iconic colors on both cars. McLaren meant a lot to him, and together they achieved a lot of success, much of which he is still remembered for today by so many. It will be special to see it race the streets of Monaco, a circuit which gave him so much joy and many triumphs.”

Legacy and Impact

Ayrton Senna remains McLaren’s most successful driver, with 35 of his 41 Grand Prix victories achieved with the team. His tenure included three drivers’ championship titles and significant contributions to four constructors’ championships.

Special Edition Road Car

In addition to the F1 livery, McLaren has introduced a special edition of the McLaren Senna road car, named the Senna Sempre. This model features a similar color scheme to the Monaco F1 car and includes a dot-matrix portrait of Senna, further commemorating his legacy.

McLaren’s tribute to Ayrton Senna at the Monaco Grand Prix not only honors the past but also celebrates the ongoing influence of a racing legend. Fans can look forward to seeing the vibrant and meaningful livery on one of Formula 1’s most iconic circuits.
