According to reports, Mercedes is eyeing the possibility of introducing a new face to the 2024 Formula 1 season with young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Sources indicate that the 17-year-old Italian driver may be on the verge of joining the Williams team, potentially stepping into the role currently held by Logan Sargeant as early as the Imola race.
However, there’s a hurdle to overcome – Antonelli is not yet eligible for an FIA super licence due to his age.
Seeking an Exception for Antonelli
Earlier this year it was revealed that Mercedes is exploring avenues to place Antonelli in the F1 spotlight, possibly in Lewis Hamilton’s seat as early as 2024. Antonelli showcased his skills during a two-day test with a 2021 Mercedes W12 in Austria, with additional tests planned using a 2022 W13.
F1 journalist Joe Saward reports that while the team is keen on promoting Antonelli, there are concerns about the magnitude of such a leap for the 17-year-old.
Loaning to Williams: A Potential Move
To navigate this challenge, a solution might lie in allowing Antonelli to gain experience with a smaller team before potentially joining Mercedes in 2026.
Williams, in need of a replacement for Logan Sargeant, could be the perfect fit. Williams is reportedly considering getting Antonelli on board for an 18-month stint. However, a significant obstacle remains – Antonelli won’t reach the minimum age requirement for a super licence until the end of August, upon turning 18.
