Verstappen’s Le Mans dream team: Alonso in the driver’s seat?

Max Verstappen, the dynamic force in Formula 1, recently stirred excitement in the motorsport world by expressing his keen interest in tackling the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Dutch sensation, contracted with Red Bull for the next five seasons, has not only dreamt of conquering the iconic race but also dropped a bombshell – he’s been in talks with none other than Fernando Alonso about being his teammate.

In a candid moment at the Honda Racing Thanks Day, Verstappen shared his Le Mans aspirations, fueled by the unforgettable atmosphere and challenges the endurance race presents.

“Le Mans I definitely would like to do,” Verstappen said.

He affirmed, recalling the captivating experiences from his father Jos Verstappen’s triumph in 2008.

When quizzed about his dream team for the event, Verstappen didn’t hesitate to name-drop Alonso, a fellow F1 driver and Le Mans winner with Toyota in 2018 and 2019.

“I’ve been speaking to Fernando about it. He said he would only want to do it with me again. That would be really cool,” Verstappen revealed.

However, Verstappen humorously pointed out a unique challenge – the lack of a minimum weight requirement for Le Mans drivers. As a heavier driver himself, he teased the need to find lighter teammates to balance the scales. Alonso, being relatively light, seemed like a fitting choice, but Verstappen playfully added:

“Then we need to find another one – I need to have a look!”

Amidst the Le Mans excitement, Verstappen also shared his interest in other motorsport categories. From the thrill of trying a MotoGP bike to enjoying the speed of Super GT and testing the impressive Super Formula car, his passion for diverse racing experiences shone through.

While Verstappen appreciates IndyCar and the prestigious Indianapolis 500, marking the final piece of the ‘Triple Crown’ alongside Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix, he remains a spectator for now.

“I like to watch it. I’ve a lot of respect for what they do, but I don’t think I’m participating,” Verstappen commented.

As the motorsport community eagerly awaits Verstappen’s Le Mans journey, the tantalizing prospect of an alliance with Alonso adds an extra layer of excitement to the ever-evolving world of racing.
