Liam Lawson wants Formula 1 to revise its driving rules. The Racing Bulls driver says current gray areas allow drivers to exploit the system.
Drivers Taking Advantage of Vague Guidelines
Speaking with media, Lawson said that F1 drivers regularly find ways to work around the current racing regulations to gain a competitive edge.
“As drivers, we always find a way to exploit and get the maximum out of the way the rules are written,” Lawson said. “We know how they are written, so we know what is allowed, what is not, and we figure out ways to use them to our advantage.”
Overtaking Rules Under Scrutiny
One major concern involves overtaking on the outside. Under current FIA guidelines, a car attempting to pass must be alongside another vehicle’s mirror to be given space. However, defending drivers can release the brakes earlier to maintain position into the apex, pushing the overtaking car off track without penalty.
Lawson noted this tactic reveals a structural flaw in the regulations.
“There are ways you can do it that can create some issues, but it is very hard to have a clear set of rules that doesn’t allow for that.”

FIA Framework Still Developing
The FIA recently published its updated penalty framework to support consistency in stewarding decisions. Ongoing discussions with the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) are expected throughout the season.
“The rules do get better and have done so in the past,” Lawson added. “But it is a constant development, and they will need to be slightly adjusted in the future.”
A Call for Tighter Limits
Lawson stopped short of offering specific solutions but made it clear that change is necessary.
“I’m not sure how, but it needs to be in a way where we can’t exploit those limits.”
The FIA continues working with teams and drivers to refine the regulations and preserve fair racing standards. For more details on the current sporting code, visit the FIA official site.
