Sebastian Vettel Applauds Norris for Showing Vulnerability in F1

Lando Norris

Formula 1 has long been defined by fast cars, fierce competition, and a “never show weakness” mentality. But that mindset is starting to shift—and Sebastian Vettel is praising Lando Norris for helping lead the change.

Following a scrappy weekend in Bahrain, Norris criticized his own performance despite finishing on the podium. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel had some heartfelt praise for the McLaren driver.

“I think it’s a positive development because we are normal people,” Vettel told Reuters. “We do have normal problems just like everybody else.”

Sebastian Vettel on Norris After Bahrain GP Struggles

Norris wasn’t shy about his Bahrain GP weekend, calling himself “clueless” in qualifying and blaming his own mistakes—including a false start from P6—for what could’ve been a stronger result. He still managed to grab third place but wasn’t satisfied.

Old-school F1 drivers might’ve kept quiet, but Norris chose to speak candidly.

“Heroism is fine but it’s also part of the heroism to just talk about your problems and your weakness. I think that’s a great development to see and to witness and, you know, real role models,” Vettel said.

Sebastian Vettel: A Shift in F1 Culture

Vettel—known for his evolution from fierce competitor to outspoken advocate—says Norris’ honesty represents a broader cultural shift in the sport.

“I don’t think it’s a sign of weakness. It might be criticized by some people, but if you look at the broader picture, I think it’s just progress,” he added.

The German champion reflected on how, growing up, he was taught to hide emotions like crying or fear—something Norris is now helping to challenge.

Teammate Rivalry? Not Quite Yet

Lando Norris currently leads teammate Oscar Piastri by three points heading into the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. While Piastri claimed victory in Bahrain and is managed by Sebastian Vettel’s old rival Mark Webber, Vettel doubts their rivalry will match the intensity of his own title duels.

But with the season heating up, it’s worth keeping an eye on this dynamic duo at McLaren.
