Guenther Steiner, former Haas F1 Team Principal, has weighed in on Mick Schumacher’s career and the challenges the young driver faces in Formula 1. Schumacher, 25, raced for the Haas team under Steiner’s management for two seasons but scored 12 points during his tenure.
Following a series of underwhelming performances, Schumacher was replaced at the end of 2022. Steiner believes the young driver has untapped potential and recommends he seek mentorship from four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.
Struggling to Make a Comeback
Mick Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut in 2021 after winning the Formula 2 championship, generating significant expectations due to his father Michael Schumacher’s legendary status in the sport. Despite his promise, he struggled to live up to the family name and establish his position on the grid.
“Even if the fans don’t care much about my opinion, Mick Schumacher should take Sebastian Vettel as a mentor. He needs it badly so he can get things back on track,” Steiner said in an interview with NTV, according to First Sportz.

Guenther Steiner on the Value of Proper Guidance
Steiner has been outspoken about the lack of proper guidance that Schumacher received throughout his Formula 1 journey. During a recent interview with Mirror Sport, Steiner highlighted the impact of not having an experienced figure to support Schumacher, unlike his father, Michael, who had Willi Weber as his manager for years.
“Look, Mick Schumacher has plenty of talent — that is not up for debate — but, in my opinion, that talent has not been nurtured correctly,” said Steiner. “I thought I was doing my bit by giving him the chance to cut his teeth in an F1 car, but, in the end, it wasn’t enough. Everyone should have done more, including him.”
Steiner pointed out that while he was critical of Schumacher’s performance during their time together. His intentions were to help the young driver grow. Now, his seat in Formula 1 is gone and the challenge of returning to the grid is looming large. Steiner’s advice is for Schumacher to draw on the experience of someone like Vettel.

Hopes of Returning to Formula 1
Currently, Schumacher serves as a reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and competes for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship. Although his immediate future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, the young driver remains hopeful of securing a seat in the upcoming seasons.
“I want to get back on the grid,” Schumacher has expressed in previous statements. He makes it clear that his dream is far from over. But the task is monumental — especially with the high expectations that come from carrying the Schumacher name. As Steiner emphasized, finding a seasoned mentor like Vettel could be crucial to his return.
