F1 Today

As we roll into the United States Grand Prix weekend, the F1 news cycle is spinning fast. Here’s a quick and fresh summary of the top stories you need to know.

Red Bull’s “Bib Trick” Catches FIA’s Eye in F1 Today

The FIA has cracked down on a technical loophole surrounding Red Bull’s RB20, specifically its adjustable front bib clearance. While Red Bull confirmed the system exists, the team assured fans that it can’t be adjusted once the car is fully assembled. The FIA has since implemented new procedures to ensure this clearance cannot be modified under parc fermé conditions. No team has been found using it unfairly, but Red Bull and the FIA have agreed on a plan moving forward. Expect tighter checks this weekend!

Fastest Lap Points Gone for 2025

Big news for 2025! F1 has decided to drop the bonus point for the fastest lap after five seasons. Originally brought back in 2019, the fastest lap point will disappear to simplify the scoring system. The initial idea to award points to the top 12 drivers was rejected, meaning the current 25-18-15 system stays. A regulatory revamp is also on the horizon for 2026, with rules being reorganized into more consistent sections. These changes are meant to add clarity ahead of the new era of F1 cars.

Lando Norris Thinks Red Bull’s Advantage May Fade

Lando Norris is feeling optimistic about the F1 title fight after it was revealed that Red Bull’s secret bib device may have given them an edge. With McLaren currently leading Red Bull in the constructors’ standings by 41 points, Norris is hopeful the FIA’s recent clampdown on the system could shift things in his favor. But he’s not totally convinced it was a game-changer, saying:

“So I don’t think it will really change anything in the scheme of things — maybe at certain qualifying when it’s been split by hundreds of a second or even thousands. Then you might say, ‘ok, well, maybe this has helped in that direction or this direction.’”

Either way, the USGP could bring some spicy on-track drama.

Hamilton Defends Red Bull Over Alleged “Cheating”

When innovation and controversy collide, expect Lewis Hamilton to speak up. Amid allegations of Red Bull “cheating” with their adjustable bib device, Hamilton came to their defense, calling it “all about innovation.” Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Hamilton said: “All the teams try to find how to massage those rules and get the most out of it.” The debate continues, but innovation remains a key part of F1.

Max Verstappen Set to Continue FIA Protest on F1 Today

Max Verstappen is continuing his protest against the FIA after receiving a community service penalty for swearing during a press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix. In response, Verstappen has begun holding his own media sessions in the paddock, giving brief answers in official FIA briefings. He has not received full details of the punishment and plans to continue speaking his mind independently. Supported by the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, Verstappen is open to discussing the matter with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem but believes the incident was blown out of proportion and unnecessary.

Leclerc Determined to Fight Until The Very End of 2024

Charles Leclerc remains determined to fight for the 2024 championship “until the very end.” He and Ferrari push to catch the leaders in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings. Leclerc is currently third in the drivers’ championship. Thirty four points behind Norris in second and 86 behind leader Verstappen. Ferrari sits third in the constructors’ standings, 34 points behind Red Bull, while McLaren leads with 516 points. Leclerc explained that Ferrari is focusing on the 2024 car with an eye on 2025.

However, they will continue to fight for wins in the remaining races. While acknowledging that the constructors’ championship is a more realistic goal, Leclerc hopes to close the gap and push until the season’s end, starting with a crucial test of Ferrari’s recent upgrades at the upcoming United States Grand Prix.
