Can Zhou Guanyu Keep His F1 Dream Alive for 2025?

Zhou Guanyu

Time for Zhou Guanyu in Formula 1 has not gone as planned. The Chinese driver joined Alfa Romeo, soon after rebranded as Stake F1, back in 2022 with high hopes. However, the past three seasons have been rough, with Zhou and his team struggling at the back of the pack.

This year has been especially challenging, as Sauber, the team behind Stake F1, remains pointless in the standings. With Sauber looking to the future, they’ve already confirmed Nico Hülkenberg for 2025, leaving the second seat still in question. And Zhou’s contract is set to end at the end of this season.

While names like Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto, Valtteri Bottas and Mick Schumacher have been thrown into the mix, Zhou seems to have fallen out of the conversation.

Fighting for a Future in F1

Zhou expressed his frustration with the season’s performance, explaining how bad luck and poor pit stops have cost the team potential points.

“Yeah, it’s really difficult because I feel like at the beginning of the year, the car was performing reasonably quite good in that midfield battle,” Zhou shared with the media. “It just seems in the wrong time that it happens that we are losing one performance on the others.”

Despite these setbacks, Zhou remains hopeful about securing the second Sauber seat for 2025. But with time running out and competition for seats intensifying, the 24-year-old recognizes the urgency of his situation.

Zhou Guanyu: Exploring Other Opportunities

While Zhou’s top priority is to stay in Formula 1, he’s not putting all his eggs in one basket. He’s received offers from other racing series and is considering them as backup options.

“At the moment, all I can say is that there are already several very good, let’s say, chances teams in other series for a drive for next year,” Zhou admitted. “I want to still get the Sauber seat. And if by any chance I don’t have that, we have to think about the rest.”

Zhou emphasized that his ultimate goal is to return to Formula 1, even if he temporarily leaves the sport. He explained the importance of not closing the door on F1, saying:

“You want to make sure that you don’t make the opportunity, maybe in other series, then you kind of just close your door.”

The Clock is Ticking

The competitive nature of Formula 1 doesn’t leave much room for waiting, and Zhou is aware of how quickly opportunities can slip away. With so many talented young drivers rising through the ranks of Formula 2, Zhou knows he must act fast.

“If you continue to wait, you could be a third driver forever,” he stated, highlighting the importance of making swift career decisions.

Zhou’s presence in Formula 1 has been vital for the sport’s visibility in China. As the first Chinese driver in F1, he’s been a source of pride and inspiration for many fans, especially during the Chinese Grand Prix, where his popularity was on full display. His departure from F1 could impact the sport’s growing fanbase in China.

What’s Actually Next for Zhou Guanyu?

Zhou remains optimistic about his future, whether in Formula 1 or elsewhere. While he’s willing to wait until 2026 for another chance in F1, if no seat opens up, he’s ready to move on and take on new challenges in motorsport.
