The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs are headed to one of the season’s most thrilling and unpredictable tracks this weekend: the world-famous Talladega Superspeedway.
The YellaWood 500, set to take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (NBC, MRN, SiriusXM), promises intense battles as drivers fight to advance in the Playoff standings. With only two races remaining in this round – Talladega and next week’s Charlotte ROVAL.
The stakes are high for the 12 Playoff-eligible drivers!
Byron Leads the NASCAR Playoffs Pack
After a strong runner-up performance at Kansas, William Byron of Hendrick Motorsports currently leads the Playoff standings. He holds a narrow six-point advantage over Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell. While, Byron’s Hendrick teammate Kyle Larson sits in fourth place.
Joining them in the top eight are JGR’s Denny Hamlin, Hendrick teammates Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott, and Team Penske’s Joey Logano. Both Elliott and Logano have just a slim four-point edge over 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick, the Regular Season Champion, making every lap at Talladega critical.

Drivers on the Edge for NASCAR Playoffs
For drivers below the cut-off line — Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suarez, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe, and Team Penske’s Austin Cindric — Sunday’s race is crucial. Talladega’s unpredictable nature could either keep their Playoff hopes alive or end their championship bid.
Blaney, a three-time winner at the track, is looking to repeat his performance from last year. His victory secured his spot in the Championship 4 and ultimately led to the season title in Phoenix.
Talladega Masters and Challengers
Among active drivers, Brad Keselowski, co-owner and driver for RFK Racing, is the most successful at Talladega. He has six career wins dating back to his first in 2009. Blaney and Elliott have also claimed multiple victories here, along with Hamlin and Logano.
However, only three current Playoff drivers (Reddick, Byron, and Bowman) finished in the top 10 at the track’s spring race this year. This truly highlights the uncertainty that comes with racing on the high-banked superspeedway.

Briscoe’s Aggressive Approach To The NASCAR Playoffs
Chase Briscoe, one of the drivers below the cut-off line, has a strong Talladega record with an average finish of 14.4, the fourth-best among active drivers with multiple starts. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver is ready to take a riskier approach this weekend.
“I think you have to have a short memory…Every time I’ve gone the conservative route, I typically end up crashed. I’m just going to go back to being on the aggressive side… try to be up in the mix for stage points and just finish the best I can.”
Chase Briscoe
A History of Surprises
Talladega’s Playoff history has been defined by upsets. Since 2014, eight of the 10 Talladega Playoff races have been won by drivers ranked outside the Round of 8 cut-off line. It makes it a prime opportunity for underdogs to shine.

Team Penske’s Blaney and Logano are the only active Playoff contenders with multiple Playoff wins at Talladega. They have each claimed two victories.
Meanwhile, NASCAR has issued a technical bulletin to enhance safety, featuring adjustments to the Rocker skirt, right-side roof flap, and extended roof rails for this weekend’s race.
Qualifying and What’s Next
Busch Light Pole Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET (USA Network, MRN, SiriusXM, NBC Sports App). Last year’s pole winner, Aric Almirola, and this spring’s pole sitter, Michael McDowell, have shown strong qualifying speed at Talladega.
With a high-speed battle and unpredictable outcomes, the YellaWood 500 could be the most impactful race of the Playoff season. Expect surprises, strategy, and perhaps a surprise victor as the Cup Series drivers fight to secure their spots in the Playoff’s Round of 8.
