Toto Wolff ‘would love’ to have Verstappen, given there’s no team who ‘wouldn’t do handstands’ to have him

Toto Wolff didn’t mince words during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend when asked about the possibility of Verstappen donning the iconic Silver Arrows.

“I’d love to have him,” he exclaimed, setting off a flurry of speculation among F1 enthusiasts worldwide. But before fans start imagining Verstappen navigating the twists and turns in a Mercedes cockpit, Wolff emphasized that the team’s primary focus is on improving their car’s performance.

The prospect of Verstappen switching teams stems from recent murmurs in the driver market. Despite being under contract with Red Bull until 2028, whispers suggest that the allure of a new challenge could entice the Dutch dynamo to explore greener pastures. With Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari opening up a seat at Mercedes for 2025, the plot thickens.

Wolff’s candid remarks underscore Mercedes’ strategic approach to driver selection. While the allure of Verstappen is undeniable, Wolff insists on prioritizing the team’s current drivers, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, by providing them with competitive machinery.

The decision on Hamilton’s successor will be carefully deliberated as the season unfolds, with Wolff eyeing a spectrum of options ranging from promising young talents to seasoned veterans.

Pressed further on Verstappen’s candidacy, Wolff’s response was telling: “There is no team up and down the grid who wouldn’t do handstands to have him in the car,” he quipped, acknowledging the universal appeal of the Dutch ace. However, he reiterated that the decision ultimately rests with Verstappen himself.

Amidst the whirlwind of speculation, Mercedes remains steadfast in their quest for improvement. After enduring a challenging period over the past two years, Wolff exudes confidence in the team’s resurgence. While dethroning Verstappen’s Red Bull remains a formidable task, Wolff is optimistic about Mercedes’ ability to reclaim their spot among the frontrunners.
