Hyundai is rumored to be eyeing Formula 1 entry

Hyundai

Hyundai, the renowned South Korean automotive giant, is reportedly eager for an entry into the world of Formula 1.

According to a report from Motorsport Week, Formula 1 journalist Joe Saward has highlighted Hyundai’s potential move into F1. The company is considering acquiring an existing team due to the limited availability of new team slots.

Motorsport Legacy

Hyundai has a significant presence in global motorsports, particularly in the World Rally Championship (WRC), where it clinched the manufacturers’ title in 2019 and 2020.

Under the leadership of Cyril Abiteboul, formerly of Renault F1, Hyundai has demonstrated profound management acumen in top-tier motorsport competitions. Since its WRC debut with the Hyundai i20N in 2014, the company has continuously pushed the boundaries of motorsport engineering.

Strategic Benefits

Hyundai’s potential entry into Formula 1 could capitalize on the sport’s growing popularity in Asia. There is speculation about a possible partnership linked to a Grand Prix in Incheon, South Korea. This move would enhance Hyundai’s global brand visibility and align with its marketing objectives in key growth markets.

Andretti Global’s Persistent Pursuit

While Hyundai contemplates its entry, Andretti Global is fervently working to secure its place on the F1 grid. Despite the FIA’s endorsement for a 2026 debut, Formula One Management initially rejected the bid and is considering a 2028 entry instead.

Andretti has shown unwavering commitment, evidenced by the establishment of its headquarters in Silverstone, UK.

Challenges Faced by New Entrants

Amid rumors of Hyundai’s interest, Formula 1 is undergoing significant changes due to ongoing revisions to the Concorde Agreement, which could impact new entrants substantially. These proposed changes include a significant increase in entry fees—from the current $200 million to a possible $600 million by 2026, and even $700 million by 2028.

Additionally, new teams might not be eligible for any prize money in their debut season. These adjustments aim to enhance the sport’s sustainability but could deter potential newcomers by raising the financial stakes significantly.

Andretti’s Determination

Andretti Global’s aspirations to join Formula 1 have been public for some time. Despite the proposed revisions to the Concorde Agreement casting a shadow over its plans, the American racing team is actively building resources and lobbying for more favorable terms. Andretti is determined to facilitate their entry into the elite motorsport league during the 2026 or 2028 seasons.

The potential entry of Hyundai into Formula 1 and the ongoing efforts of Andretti Global highlight the dynamic nature of the sport.
